The Icelandic Sheepdog
The Icelandic sheepdog is Iceland´s only native dog. It came to Iceland with the original Viking settlers in AD 874-930. The Icelandic sheepdog and its method of working adapted to the local terrain, farming methods and struggle for survival of the Icelandic people.
The Icelandic sheepdog is very small in numbers and for a while was in serious danger of extinction.
The Icelandic Kennel Club, Hundaræktarfélag Íslands, was founded on 4th September 1969 by a group of people concerned with the preservation of the Icelandic sheepdog and with the intention of saving the Icelandic sheepdog from extinction and keeping the breed pure. In 1979 the Icelandic sheepdog breed club, Deild Íslenska Fjárhundsins, was founded within the Icelandic Kennel Club and from that time has been responsible for the development and safeguarding of the breed.
This video is based on the official breed standard for the Icelandic sheepdog. The breed standard sets down clearly what the dog should look like, its temperament and working ability. This information is vital for breeders of the Icelandic sheepdog and anyone with an interest in the breed.
